Research at the Capital

I was at the Legislature Library here in Edmonton today doing some newspaper research using microfilm. The microfilms may be about the same everywhere, but it is nice to work in such a beautiful and historic building for a day, and come outside afterwards to enjoy the beautiful gardens.

My main projects this summer have been Irish-Canadian, but I have also been working on a German-American case recently. In each, obituaries were key pieces of evidence that I needed to locate in order to complete my task. Although there seems to be so much available online today, most of what I need is still offline. In addition to microfilm forays, I have ordered obituaries this week from one historical society, and one museum. Thankfully these types of organizations are filling the gap between what has been left undigitized, and what cannot be accessed via interlibrary loan.
